Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder that has no cure and many caregivers and sufferers are getting frustrated with the ineffectiveness of standard care. So like millions of others suffering from chronic illness they are turning to more natural and alternative treatments. According to a recent study the Chinese are treating CP much more effectively with a combination of therapies including physical and occupational therapies as well as hydrotherapy and acupuncture than the standard CP care in the US.
Acupuncture has been used for centuries to treat many disorders and though there have been only a few clinical studies those that have been published indicate that acupuncture improved daily functioning and increased independence as well as improved verbal function in the children studied. another study combined acupuncture with music therapy and found that the combination is even more effective in improving the daily functioning leading to increased independence in children with CP. There are also several other types of alternative treatments that are currently being used that have been effective in improving the quality of life for children with CP. Cranial sacral therapy is a gentle massage of the head and spine to help steady the childs gait and help promote independence. Therapeutic electrical stimulation is a treatment that uses electrodes that are placed on the affected muscles at night. The electrodes send tiny impulses to the muscles increasing the blood flow and stimulating muscle growth Another therapy that has been getting more popular is dance therapy. The combination of music and movement help increase coordination and physical development as well as helping children with CP express their feelings and develop communication skills.
Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient Hindu system that has been practiced for thousands of years in India. This system uses various combinations of herbal medicines known as “Medhya” to treat CP. The “Medhya” has been effective in improving brain function and is believed to help the regeneration of damaged brain cells. Another group of herbal medicines that have been effective is the “Majja’ dhatu. These act on the tissue and improve nerve conduction as well as muscle coordination. The noni fruit has been studied and used to treat a wide variety of illnesses. Noni is bleieved to aide in the regeneration of the damaged neurons. The impressive combination of substances in the noni and the way they work together to support the many systems in our body’s according to the individual needs of each system is what makes the noni so unique and effective. Dr ralph Heinicke is a well known American biochemist that has been studying the noni and it’s effectiveness in treating CP. While it’s important to remember noni is not a medicine so you will not see a miraculous effect right away but over time the results is significant. In fact Dr Heinicke states “I can say here just start the noni as quick as possible and give the child a new life”.
Remember alternative treatments should always be discussed with your Dr before you start. Never stop conventional treatments, use alternative treatments with the current treatment plan to create an effective and complete treatment plan.
