Low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) are the two main types of cholesterol which is found in the human body and is a fat like substance that our bodies need for the production of healthy cells, vitamins, bile acids, cell membranes and many types of hormones and only a limited amount is required at any given time.  There are many factors in ones life that can cause a rise in cholesterol and increase the risk of many heart ailments.  When these levels are too high hard fatty deposits or in other words plaque will begin to form on the arteries and with time these will cause the arteries to narrow and eventually cause the blood going to your heart to flow improperly and eventually cause some plaque to rupture and get free and get stuck in your arteries and block vital blood from going to and fro your heart and before you know it, its heart attack time, if your lucky because if it continues to go around your arteries it may eventually go right into your brain and cause you to have a stroke which is also life threatening.  The cholesterol which is responsible for this is called LD and is bad cholesterol.
HDL is the good cholesterol because it carries excess cholesterol back to ones liver where the live breaks it down and eliminates it from the body. So it is vital that your LDL levels be lower and your HDL levels are higher to greatly lowers your chances of a heart attack.
To lower your bad cholesterol levels try including fiber rich foods and lots of soluble fiber as it performs as a perfect sponge inside your body to absorb cholesterol.  Also try eating lots of fruits and vegetables and lots of whole grain products as they are rich in fiber.

The first line of treatment to control high cholesterol levels is a healthy diet hand in hand with regular exercise. But for some people merely diet and lifestyle changes may not be enough to lower their risk of heart disease. So for such people, cholesterol-lowering medication may be the order of the day. The choice of these drugs depends on the person’s age, health status, and side effects. Such medicines are designed to bring down elevated cholesterol levels faster than lifestyle modifications.
