 protein 45 mins after workout??
hey guys, this dude at the gym yesterday was trying his damndest to convince me that i needed to drink my protein shake within 45 mins of working out or it wouldnt do what it needs to do. also that i shouldnt eat anything within that time period while the protein is digesting. im not saying he's right or wrong, but is there any truth to this?
-
IMO preworkout protein is more important than postworkout.
Think about it. If you drink a shake before your workout your body will have digested and allowed all those AA to be used by the time you are done your workout.
If you drink a shake after your workout you still need to digest it before it can be used.
Sure it will be used eventually, but the pre workout shake can be available for the time immediately after the workout.

Before a workout I will usually have some oats and a shake.
After a working I like fruit or oats and another shake

hey east, whats the reason for the oats and fruit? you mean like oats like oatmeal oats?
-
Fruit... I like fruit better than drinking dextrose or any other powder carbs (but I want to give Trueprotein waxy maise starch a try). Oatmeal isa good quick source of good complex carbs.

your bro was partly right. the body can absorb alot more protien directly within the 45min after a work out than at any other time during the day, with the exception of first thing in the morning. it has to do with the anabolic state a work out induces. you can also utilize a much higher ratio of protien (almost up to your wieght equivliant in grams) within that time frame. for me i usualy use an average serving of whey about an hour before my workout with plenty of carbs; then post w/o i use a much faster digesting hydrolised protien. to each his own, but this works well for me, and i have found that my recovery time is minimal.

I was told to down your whey protein shake at 50-65 grams right after your workout.Because some gets destroyed by stomach acids.
-
I don't understand that logic. There is always acid in your stomach so therefore waiting a specific period of time will not help or hurt anything in that regard. Nothing will get "destroyed".

But i thought that was the whole reason why the c17 alpha alkylated was added to orals?
-
17alpha alkylated oral steroids have that alteration so that they are not destroyed by the liver. There is no concern with this for proteins.

Protein shakes begin to be assimilated almost instantly when drank anytime. After a workout your mucle glycogen stores are tapped, and your body will shift the "need" for glucose and amino acids towards muscle repair in the short period of time after you lift. Cortisol is HIGH, your fatigued. This is why we drink a simple carb shake like dextrose or maltodextrin, something with a very high GI to induce an insulin splike. Insulin drives cortisol down and acts as the "key" to unlocking the bodies cells (here, mostly muscle cells but fat too) allowing them to accept nutrients and in our case, glucose and amino acids.
Your freind was right, but he forgot about the high GI carb source immediatly after the workout.

Don't forget about the rest of the day, if your diet is shit until right before and right after your workout, it won't amount to a hill of beans anyways.
It's all important. The pre and post workouts are just a meal or two out of the day, and your body doesn't just recover an hour or so after a workout, but even on non-workout days.

Yep.
Protein powder is great stuff, but food is better.
You need to make sure that your diet is on target ALL THE TIME, not just pre and post workout.

Single best nutrition advice right there.

I'm a newbie and when I first got on I was asking a lot about protien supplements, and this was what everybody told me. I felt like I got a good product but what helped the most was getting my diet in check. Stay disciplined, and you'll have great results, I feel a lot better after employing it just one month. Like everyone told me, supplements are just that, supplements to a good diet.

15 min after workout is the peak protein absorption then it slowly declines from there.
