How long do powders last?

Can anyone tell me how long protein powders stay viable after their use by date has passed? I was in a store last week that was throwing away a pile of Pro Lab and MetRx meal replacement sachets because they had expired. They gave them to me for nothing when I asked about them.

The MetRx ones are only just past expiry - like 3 days or so. The Pro Lab ones supposedly expired in November last year. I'm sure the MetRx is fine to take. How about the Pro Lab?

They are fine. Fast expiry date = throwing them out = retailers buying more product.
