Default to get a good debate going...
Who would you say is a better fighter? As in, who would win in a toe-to-toe, no rules/regulations fight...MMA fighter or trained boxer? why? any personal experiences that prove/dis-prove your theory?

and yes, im sure that this topic has been argued over before on these forums, but i'm bored at work and thought it would be a good way to pass the hours...

i dont see how a trained boxer would stand any chance against an mma fighter (considering both had a decent skill level).

If the boxer wont let the fight go to the ground...he's got it. If the MMA fighter shoots and succeeds...he's got it. Every fight begins on your feet, therefore the boxer has the initial advantage; if he's quick enough and has good knowledge of how to end it with a few throws...i would have to give the trained boxer the edge. of course, once the MMA fighter takes the fight to the ground, the boxer is pretty much screwed...

boxers and street fighters tend to panic when they hit the ground. Another reason wrestlers would dominate in bar, street, or back yard fights. I remember as a little kid being intimated by bullies and fighters so I took taekwondo, was STILL intimidated.. and then I started wrestling. I knew then it gave me the edge and I held my own from then on out. Like BJJ, it's one of the truest forms of self defense. Around that time the UFC started and wrestlers emerged as a fav to win these type of fights.

Obviously an MMA guy would win. I would pick a average MMA guy to beat a top boxer.

It is easy to dodge punches if you keep your distance and don't try and throw any punches yourself. Then shoot in for the takedown as the boxer probably has no take down defence. Then it will be a brutal ground and pound or submission for the win.

Even if the boxer ended up on top, if the MMA guy has a decent guard he will be able to submit the boxer no problem or sweep. If you don't know much about BJJ you will put yourself in shitty positions all day long and get tapped all day long.

    WTF.

    Randy Couture (Wrestler)
GSP ( Was gonna Qualify for the Canadian Olympic Wrestling Team)
    Rampage (Wrestler)
    Chuck Liddel (Wrestler)
    Koscheck (Wrestler)
    Matt Hughes (Wrestler)
Sean Sherk (Wrestler)... ok he's pretty boring

If you don't have a good overall wrestling backround or knowledge, 9 times out of 10 your not gonna make it. Your refering to a very small group of wrestlers that don't adapt. JT from TUF is a perfect example or Sean Sherk or someone like that, that just controls position and tries to squeeze out point victories. But saying that wrestlers are stupid shows that you know nothing about the SPORT of MMA. That's like saying strikers are really boring when they get taken down. Dumb.

Ya, pure wrestlers are boring. Matt hughes was boring for a long time, Sherk, Jt etc... Ive never seen rampage or Chuck lay on someone, chuck especially, he never goes to the ground, I wouldnt consider chuck or Rampage "wrestlers" styilistically, nor do i consider GSP a "wrestler" The guy likes to fight. What i said or meant to say, is that i dont want "Pure" wrestlers such as sherk, Jt etc.. in mma. I understand that you have to have some kind of wrestling background, but i hate pure wrestlers, people that lay on people for 15 minutes, and i think everyone would agree with me there. Like dan henderson, MoM and i were talking about this, there is something about his fights that are just incredibly boring for some reason.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Sherk's boxing looked good and he can beat almost anyone in the division if he learns to mix up his gameplan like gsp.

Penn made Sherk's boxing looker terrible because he that good. The fact that Sherk was even able to hit Penn with his stubby arms shows a lot of skill.

Sherk needs to really work his BJJ and stand up.

To be dominant in MMA these days you need good striking, wrestling, and BJJ. Long gone are the days of one dimensional fighters. Hughes was the first to fall, hopefully Sherk can figure out a striking game so he can stay competitive.

Thats quite possibly the most ignorant post to date in this forum.
..besides Dirks list, you can add Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver. A wrestlers background gives him MUCH MUCH MORE then just the "wrestling" advantage. It carries over into other parts of the sport. Just because some guys choose to lay and pray, doesn't mean it's because they are a wrestler. It's because they choose to fight in a lay and pray manor.
