Do you guys have any drills that you do outside of the gym to help with your BJJ?

Other than stretching I am looking for some types of drills that will help with BJJ

Custom Mouthguard: Do any of you guys have one? I will probably pick up a Shock Doctor for now, then look into a custom fit guard.

    BJJ

I took a knee in the face drilling

Then when we were rolling two other guys got into our space landed on my head and I cranked my teeth together.

Cats have 9 lives, not to sure how many my teeth have and I don't want to test it

mouthpieces are usually used to help prevent concussions, it cant really hurt you to wear one, it might affect your breathing a bit and i think it would be a major pain in the ass ,but to each his own.

i use a shock doctor cup that feels awkward and uncomfortable but does the job.

i use some generic mouthguard right now but want a custom one with some shit written on it soon.

Ya, I think it's all a must no matter what... but I also train full contact (no headgear) kick boxing/Mui Thai along with BJJ. I don't walk into training without my cup, strap, and mouthguard, even on BJJ & wrestling only days. I even use my cup as a guage when pulling off arm bars and knee bars/leg locks. I know by where the arm or leg is on my cup if I've got the submission locked right.
I've got a higher end shock doctor mouthguard. Works well, feels ok. You get use to the breathing, fit, etc.. if you always train w/it. We even do conditioning with mouthguards in to practice how real-match breathing will feel.
Cup is pretty basic... but size is XXL of course

theres many subs that use the gi, and in street fighting your going to be wearing clothes so the gi reprsents real life situations, this is what martial arts is meant for , self defence. if a guys ****s with you and he happens to be wearing a coat, slap a collar choke on him, hell be out in less than 10 sec

That's the answer I was looking for, makes some sense in real life. I don't like the gi when it comes to mma, but I can see where it would be practical.

I just started Gi classes and it is alot tougher. And BJJ was designed to be done with a Gi. No-gi BJJ only became popular because of MMA and the fighter clothing rules.

Gi also makes you be more technical. You can slip out of subs and powder your way through moves with the Gi on.

Exactly. Plus it also represents the structural side of the art.. the dicipline, rank/belt tiers, history, formalities, etc..

and like diddy said, the gi can used like a weapon.

I currently prefer no gi only because I'm incorporating into fighting/MMA... if I ever just decide to go back to wrestling only, I'd go formal w/gi BJJ.

Stretching is huge... Also (of course) strength and conditioning outside of class as well. I also have been dabling in Plyometrics and Isometrics which is great for MMA and BJJ. I've been told Yoga goes great with BJJ but have yet to try it.. I am considering it though.
I do practice submission combo's on my girlfriend at home..lol No shit. BJJ/wrestling is just something you need a partner to practice with.. I'll download different/new tutorials, practice them at home, and then try and execute while sparing in class
Honestly, I also will lay in bed or on the couch at night, close my eyes and work stuff over and over in my head. It's such a technical sport.. The visualization seems to work well for me.

My wife won't let me try shit out on here.

I downloaded some awesome BJJ torrents and I want to try some shit (ie. armbar from back control, triangle from back control, and a couple sweeps) but she won't let me.

I am thinking about picking up some mats and setting them up in the basement to do some drills. My neighbor comes to some BJJ classes, so he will be in for some mat time.

i beat my g/f all the time, hip throw onto the bed followed by a kimura, seriously though you sholud get a couple mats and practice at home, you learn alot by teaching, even if your a noob teaching, what you already know will really get you thinking about technique and how to apply certain moves.
dont spend a ton an mats though, just by the cheap jigsaw puzzle type mats at canadian tire, they will be fine for everything but serious take downs

LOLz.. You've gotta take a different angle. Tell her it's for her benefit. You're going to teach her basic self defense and techniques that will help her over power an attacker
