 boxing/muy thai
Does anyone know any good muay thai or boxing classes in pensacola fl. I know of pensacola boxing acadamy but the classes are just too expencive. Thank you very much
-
there prolly is a hundred more gyms, search on the internet, yellowpages or whatever. They're prolly going to be pretty expensive all around. Look for the run down looking ads/gyms.
-
Nope... but maybe try searching for MMA gyms in the area and surroundings. Those are popping up everyday and offer a wide range of styles. Also, alot of Martial Arts Academies are now offering Mui Thai and BJJ, etc.. So check with local karate dojo's as well, since most are adding kick boxing and mma style fighting to their ciriculum.
I recommend MMA instruction if possible. ...unless your dead set on being a Mui Thai fighter.

Search online
Then go in and try each gym out. A decent gym will give you a free day to see how you like it.

pensacola produced RJJ, so some boxing gyms must be good

RJJ boxes at pensacola boxing academy. You have to have a gym membership at 60$ per month plus it is 10$ per class. That is just to much for my budget. if i went twice a week it would cost me 140$ a month.
Thanks for the advice guys, I have been looking into them online and in the yellow pages and havent had any luck

Check into a long term class contract.. it's usually cheaper then paying per class. ..but yes, that is approx the going rate right now for a top level class. I've seen it as low as $40/month and as high as $180/month. I guess I consider myself lucky, I've got a UFC vet willing to do it for close to the lower end w/unlimited class access. Keep looking, their out there.

FYI, MMA type of training isn't going to be cheap. You are going to pay $100+ per month no matter where you look.
Unless you want to go to the YMCA and do cardio kick boxing with middle aged women.
The place I go is $60/month for BJJ. Classes are 3 times per week. They also have boxing and kicking boxing which is another $50 per month (I think you get a discount if you do boxing + BJJ)

i pay 120 a month with unlimited training mon-sat 430 pm- 1000pm,
id say 140 a month to train at the same gym that RJJ trains at is a bargain, if your serious to learn spend the extra money

check out sherdog.com searching for the cities you're interested in
100+ is the going rate i've seen

Yep. many many times.
My first couple classes I got frustrated, but now I realize that means I have a lot more to learn

Just power through the submissions

nope, technique over comes power almost everytime. first bjj class i ever took i was collar choked by a korean girl who weighed about 110 lbs, i couldnt belive it i was hooked after that, needless to say after only a few months i was able to tap out new guys with 50 lbs on me with relitive ease

It get's better! First BJJ class I was ever in I got put in a rear naked choke by a 17 year old kid that weighed about 50 lbs less then me. It's a humbling experience to say the least..lol. I was lucky, most guys at my school were extremely cool and happy to help, teach, correct, etc.. My brothers first experience w/Jui Jitsu was with guys who would choke newbies out for fun, tapping wasn't an option. You took the nap whether you wanted to or not. Once you gain a little technique/experience and couple that with your strength at the proper time, they work very well together.

Your brother needs to find a new school to train at. That's isn't the way to learn.
I have been going for about 6 weeks now and I am alot better. I still get caught in subs, but I am also able to sub some guys and I have decent defense.
The main thing I need to work on his hip mobility. I have a ***** of a time with arm bars from guard only because I can't get my torso at 90 degrees.
I have just started into Gi BJJ, and I also need to learn how to best use the Gi. Yesterday I had a guy mounted and I had no idea how to finish. That was frustrating.

do lots of shrimpys, this may help
-
I always played hockey and football growing up so I have a hard time relaxing my muscles. My instructor keeps saying:
1. I need more hip flexibility
2. I need more hip mobility
3. I need to relax the muscle that I don't need to be using
I know this will all come with time.
-
thats funny, hip mobility has always been one of my strong points, i almost always fight from the guard and have really good arm bars, triangles and omoplatas...my weak area has always been wrestling and powering over guys, even when i can i, usually go to guard

try going to knee up or side mount position, there is actually more opions for subs from there, try arm bars, americana, and the kimura, one of my fav moves from side control is the clock choke but its a little advanced. from the mount you should be able to get a pretty tight collar choke

My hip mobility is no good either. Flexibility isn't terrible but I just can't transition like the smaller guys.

never forget that boxing is important. that can never ever be stressed enough. i'm not saying that other disciplines aren't important...what i'm saying is that they are options for you to have in situations. when it really comes down to it, it's really hand to hand :3
