PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) -

The owner of an Ohio zoo filled with lions, tigers, bears, wolves, and more was found dead on Tuesday.

According to Zanesville Mayor Henry Zwelling, the owner is believed to have committed suicide. However, before he did, he let all the animals loose.

“I did get a call from my safety director and he told me that the owner had turned them loose and had shot himself,” Mayor Zwelling said.

Now, a frantic search for over 40 dangerous animals is on outside of Zanesville.

KDKA-AM’s Larry and John talked to Mayor Zwelling, who says he’s worried about public safety and that the sheriff is shooting the animals.

“It’s my understanding that the county sheriff and deputies are out. The last I heard last night, they had killed over 25 of these wild animals and there were 48 loose,” Mayor Zwelling said.

Some people are concerned that the animals are being killed instead of tranquilized, including the mayor.

“It bothers me a little bit also. I was not consulted about this. It happened outside the city and so the sheriff has taken charge of this whole thing. I have not talked to the sheriff,” Mayor Zwelling said.

City officials are telling residents to stay inside and several schools in the area are closed.

Wow ! That is crazy in many levels, obiously this man had mental issues...
Of course everyone's safety should be the priority here, but I love animals, and if they can tranquilize them instead of killing them I think that would be a better choice.

Ya why shoot the girafe. Like what's he gonna do to your family. Eat your big tree in your front yard. The guy was murdered they are saying. But that happened last night and there missing two mountain lions , couple gorillas, grizzly bear, and some.wolves. Pretty intense animals. Ya Mrs I'm a huge animal lover my self. I actually volunteer at the humane society. That's where I got my lil boys. My doggie diesel in my pic is a boxer mix. Poor fella got nuetered last Thursday. He's been so sad.

I think all the nimals were killed, right ? what a sad ending for them, I wonder what drove this man to do this? I heard he rescued most of the animals and took good care of them.... oh well, another person that snaps I guess..

Ya Mrs he's feeling better. They said there are 2400 of those tigers left and he killed 18 of then . They also said one of the monkeys had herpes. Lol
