Health and lifestyle decisions can affect many of the external causes of aging skin and are determined by the decisions that you make every day. Making bad and unhealthy choices will most surely cause prematurely aging skin, and this makes you look older, faster.

Here are 5 habits that contribute to aging skin, making you look older than what you really are.

Stress: To help reduce aging skin due to stress, be aware of your stress level and learn techniques to eliminate stress that you can do at your desk or kitchen. Meditation and Yoga are gentle exercises and relaxation techniques that can help our skin from aging faster. Keeping stress in check will help you look and feel younger.

Smoking is a habit that can lead to leathery, wrinkled skin.

Cigarette smoke Whether you spend time with a smoker, or smoke yourself: cigarette smoke is harmful and rapidly aging your skin.  Research has shown that exposure to cigarette smoke significantly increases skin dryness and wrinkles.  This is partly due to cigarette smoke depleting your body of Vitamin C, which is an ever so important ingredient for keeping skin moist and plump.

Lack of sleep: Too little sleep makes you feel and look tired.  The first place lack up sleep shows up is on the face, with dark circles and bags under the eyes. Lack of sleep is also important in memory loss and symptoms of depression that include low interest in daily activities and negative thinking.  Shoot for 8-9 hours of sleep each night.  Avoid eating at least 2 hours before bedtime, and maintain a sleep routine that includes going to bed at the same time each night.

Alcohol usage: I know, sad to say that ice cold beer or that wonderful fruit juice cocktail that you must have when the happy hour bell rings is, well, bad for your skin.  When you drink alcohol, one of the effects is that it dilates the small blood vessels in the skin that increases blood flow near the skin’s surface. As time goes by (and the drinks) these blood vessels will become permanently damaged, creating a flushed appearance and broken vessels on the skin’s surface.

Going to bed with your makeup still on: Although the temptation to plop down on your nice and comfy bed may be overbearing without cleaning your face, remember that by skipping a cleanser at night this will most certainly lead to breakouts later.  An environmental toxin (like pollution and dirt) can build up on skin and penetrate your pores, this can cause complexion problems. Try keeping a box of cleansing towelettes in your drawer besides your bed to simply swipe and sleep.

While some signs of aging skin are inevitable, there are many things that you can do to look your best at any age.  Observance and practice against these harmful enemies can and will most certainly help your skin keep its tight and “glow’ about it.
