The FDA has admonished Diamond Foods for statements that it made about the healthy consumption of walnuts. A letter was sent from the FDA to them stating,” Your walnuts products are drugs and new drugs at that, and therefore they may not legally be marketed in the United States without an approved new drug application.”
In its latest attack against our health and freedom, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a warning to Diamond Foods stating that their claims for the health promoting qualities of walnuts have transferred them from a food to a drug. At the same time, it allows Frito-Lay to advertise its grease laden health-destroying chips as “heart healthy”.
Walnuts may be considered the king of nuts for health benefits, with a combination of more healthful and higher quality antioxidants. In the nut scale, walnuts rank above peanuts, almonds, pecans, pistachios and other nuts. A handful of walnuts contains almost twice as much antioxidants as the same amount of any other commonly consumed nut. The omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts have been shown to have many health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. They contain plenty of high-quality protein that can substitute for meat; vitamins and minerals; dietary fiber; and they are dairy and gluten free. Antioxidants in walnuts were two to 15 times as potent as vitamin E, which is renowned for its powerful antioxidant effects, which protect the body against damaging natural chemicals involved in causing disease.
All this may be very well true but it is simply not good enough for the FDA which announced to Diamond Foods that they had “misbranded” their nuts under the guise that their health claims are not authorized by them.
The FDA continued in its attack stating to them that, ” We have determined that your walnut products are promoted for conditions that cause them to be drugs because these products are intended for use in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of disease.” Furthermore, the products are also “misbranded” because they “are offered for conditions that are not amenable to self-diagnosis and treatment by individuals who are not medical practitioners; therefore, adequate directions for use cannot be written so that a layperson can use these drugs safely for their intended purposes.” So it seems to me that now you and everyone else will have to have a doctors approval before you can buy walnuts for your next Christmas family get together.
This is a clear all out attack on health foods and on people seeking to reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and eating healthy. It is very obvious that these and many more food items are good for our health but it appears that the FDA does not want a healthy and informed people.
This is also an attack on both your health and your right to free speech. The FDA does not care about science. It does not care about your health. It does not care about the truth. It is only interested in supporting its corporate masters. To this end, it uses its massive power to shut down the truth and ignore all out lies when it’s beneficial to big corporate leaders.
It is very sad to point out that foods that are obviously not good for us are promoted without remorse. This excerpt comes from the Frito lays web page;” Frito-Lay snacks start with real farm-grown ingredients. You might be surprised at how much good stuff goes into your favorite snack. Good stuff like potatoes, which naturally contain vitamin C and essential minerals. Or corn, one of the world’s most popular grains, packed with Thiamin, vitamin B6, and Phosphorous – all necessary for healthy bones, teeth, nerves and muscles.” What goes is not what comes out sad to say. Frito-Lay’s is an expert in evading the issue of processing. By the time a chip rolls off the production line, it’s hard to imagine much nutrition left, beyond health destroying highly refined grains, along with the pesticide gene in GM corn. They completely fail to inform you that these “real farm-grown ingredients” are genetically modified, meaning lower in nutrition and more fattening to the consumers. Please keep in mind that the money made by the expensive cardiac drugs, stents in the treatment of coronary artery blockages and coronary bypass procedures, is large, very large.
In short, there is more money and power in keeping people sick that in having a healthy and well informed society where one can take dietary actions without needing doctor’s approval to eat healthy foods.
So the next time you’re in the kitchen fixing your grandmothers famous dark chocolate walnut pie close your shades lest some FDA officials break your door down and confiscate it.
