It bothers you when you're around someone with it and it is embarrassing if you have it...

Bad breath is embarrassing but easy to take care of.

It bothers you when you’re around someone with it and it is embarrassing if you have it but, thankfully, bad breath is one problem that is almost always easily taken care of. Understanding the causes of bad breath, also known as halitosis in the medical and dental professions, will allow you to deal with getting rid of this undesirable condition.

1. Diet. Some foods, like onions and garlic, carry with them a heavy odor caused by chemical compounds that stay in the blood stream and are expelled through the lungs. A breath mint or mouthwash will mask the odor but until the food is fully digested and the offending toxin in the food is expelled by the lungs, there is no way to get rid of the odor other than to stop eating the foods that cause the bad breath.
Also, some diets that are high in protein such as the Atkins Diet or South Beach Diet can lead to bad breath, although most people who report bad breath from these diets say it is a temporary condition.

2. Bacteria in the mouth. Poor dental habits can lead to bacteria and sulfuric compounds growing in the teeth and gums; including methyl mercapta, cadaverine, putrescine, and sulfide. Brushing twice daily and flossing at least once daily will prevent food from rotting in the mouth and the development of these bacteria.

3. Dry mouth. When the mouth is dry, there is not enough saliva to clean the mouth of small particles of food which in turn leads to bad breath. Keeping the body well-hydrated is a good solution to keep this kind of bad breath from occurring, although people with severe xerostomia (fancy word for dry mouth) may need to use artificial saliva to fix this problem.

4. Tobacco and excessive alcohol use. Smoking is not only bad for the lungs, but it is also bad for the teeth, gums and mouth. Tobacco stains the teeth and the smoke can permeate the gums, giving smokers chronically bad breath. Quitting smoking is the only way to effectively get rid of the smell of “smoker’s breath.”
Alcohol will also cause bad breath. Part of the way the body deals with the toxin of alcohol is to carry it to the lungs through the blood stream, which is why people have alcohol on their breath until they are sober. Breath mints and mouthwash are very bad at masking alcohol on the breath (just ask any police officer whose job it is to patrol for drunk drivers). Allowing the body to sober up is the only solution to this kind of bad breath.

5. A medical condition. If you have persistant bad breath and you brush and floss regularly, don’t smoke or drink and have avoided bad breath foods like onion, you may have a severe medical condition and should immediately consult a physician. Diseases of the lungs, throat and nasal cavity are often the culprits, and they can range from mild to severe. If you suspect that your bad breath is caused by something other than food or smoking – don’t hesitate, see a doctor.

If allergies are persistent, even in your bed, then it may be time to think about allergy protection for your pillows and mattresses...

Special pillow liners may be the cure for night time allergy issues.

Are you one of the millions of people who wake up every morning with a runny nose and watery eyes? Do you wake up in the night from sneezing and congestion? If allergies are persistent, even in your own bed, then it may be time to think about allergy protection for your pillows and mattresses.
Allergy encasings are designed to keep the allergens caused my dust mites from getting airborne and attacking your nasal cavities while you sleep. Dust mites are miniscule creatures that thrive in environments like pillows and mattresses. Their waste and dead bodies become airborne easily by the vacuum effect your nose and mouth have while sleeping and in turn aggravate your allergies.
Fortunately, there are a variety of allergy encasings for you to choose from that do not necessarily mean you have to cover your bed with and sleep on plastic. The best choice for allergy encasings are ones with a urethane lining. Urethane linings have a pore size of zero, which means that they allow zero allergens through. Urethane encasings are often couples with fabric for comfort and so your bed doesn’t look like a plastic bubble.
Besides the urethane-lined allergy encasings, there are also all-fabric encasings available. These encasings are made with durable high-tech fabrics that are woven so tight that even very tiny particles can’t get through. The important thing to look out for when purchasing fabric allergy encasings is the fabric’s pore size. Some allergens can get through fabric encasings with a larger pore size and if you have sever reactions to dust mites, you may need to opt for the smallest pore size available or a zero pore size encasing that is made with a urethane lining.
Allergy encasings are easy to use. Just zip them around your pillows, mattresses and down comforters and you are on your way to allergy-free sleep. Today’s allergy encasings are also easy to care for and very comfortable to sleep on. And best of all, they are an easy solution to your allergy problems.

Beyond just feeling blue, severe depression can completely take over a perrson and cause other major health problems - even death...

Treatment for severe depression can reduce the risk of other health issues.

Beyond just feeling blue, severe depression can completely take over a person and cause other major health problems – even death. Severe depression is characterized by an inability to enjoy life or take pleasure in normal fun activities. It can debilitate every aspect of your life from your health to your job to your relationships with family and friends. Unfortunately, only about a third of all people suffering from depression seek treatment. Outdated stereotypes of mental illness may be to blame, as well as gender issues – men are less likely to seek help for depression than women.
Recognizing the signs of severe depression will help you help yourself if you suffer from it and also may help you help others who may suffer from depression. Look for these following tell-tale signs of depression and seek help immediately if any or all of these manifest.

1. Chronic feelings of “the blues.” Do you feel down all the time, even when you should feel happy? The difference between normal, or situational, depression and clinical depression (the kind that needs medical attention) is that situational depression is associated with specific events in one’s life, such as the death of a loved one, a break-up of a relationship or a bout with substance abuse and clinical depression stays with a person for no apparent reason. If you or someone you know has down feelings without apparent cause, seek professional help.

2. Sleep disorders. One of the signs of severe depression that is easy to recognize is a deteriorating sleep pattern. When people suffer from severe depression, they will often begin to oversleep or want to stay in bed all day. But because not all people are the same, the opposite is also true. Depressed people will also stay awake and not sleep enough. These conditions get worse as the depression gets more and more severe.

3. Eating disorders. A severely depressed person will also develop eating disorders. Some will barely touch their food and begin to eat less and less and the depression grows. Others will react in the exact opposite and begin eating more and more. If you notice yourself or a loved one getting to skinny or too fat, seek help immediately so it can be determined whether you are depressed or if you are suffering from other problem causing the eating disorder.

4. Fluctuations of your energy level. Are you suddenly sluggish and slowed-down? Or perhaps you feel high-strung all the time? If your daily energy level seems unstable in any way, this is a sign of severe depression and it is one that you may notice most at work. If you are unable to complete ordinary tasks that you were able to do easily before, or if you are wired all the time to the point of distraction at work, these are strong indicators that you may be suffering from depression.

5. Self-loathing thoughts. When people suffer from severe depression, they begin to see faults in everything they do. They are unfairly critical to themselves and are unable to forgive themselves for their faults. This can lead to even darker thoughts of suicide. If you feel these thoughts about yourself and especially if you have thought of ways to end your life, seek immediate help.

Preventative care for your colon is an important step to reducing the chance of colon cancer.

Like any other part of your body’s digestive tract, your colon is affected by the foods you eat. The old saying goes, “garbage in, garbage out.” But in the case of your colon, the garbage that goes in doesn’t come out. People with diets high in proteins and fats and those who snack constantly on greasy chips and French fries or sugary snacks are more likely to develop problems with their colon. Over time, a colon can build up a plaque that can turn hard as plastic. Fortunately, there are treatments available to cleanse the colon, as well as holistic approaches to keep the colon healthy on its own.

1. Wash it out
One of the common ways to get the colon back into health is through hydrotherapy, also known as the enema. An enema is where water is forced into the colon to wash out the buildup of toxins and plaque that lines the colon walls. Health stores and pharmacies carry a wide assortment of enemas, colonics and other colon cleansers designed to wash out the colon. Be sure to consult your doctor before using an enema or other colon cleansing product because they can do harm to your colon if it is already too damaged or too unhealthy.

2. An ounce of prevention
Most people are uncomfortable with the thought of an enema, and rightly so –they’re uncomfortable. Luckily, there are ways to keep your colon healthy so you won’t have to go through that ordeal. Colon health starts with diet. Eliminating junk food from your diet is one of the best ways to ensure a healthy colon. Eating a low-protein diet that is high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains will also keep your colon healthy. Dates, prunes and raisins in small dosed are also good to keep bowel movements regular. Also, keeping your body’s level of beneficial bacteria by eating yogurt will help keep the digestive tract functioning properly. Staying properly hydrated is also important to keep your colon healthy.

3. Colon cleansing diet
A popular new method for colon health is to go on a special, detox diet that cleanses the colon without hydrotherapy. Detox diets usually consist of eating only raw vegetables and drinking water or special detox mixtures and last for about two to three weeks. You must consult a doctor before going on any detox diet, as there could be certain health risks associated with a constricted diet. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid colon cleansing diets.

The benefits of a clean colon are worth the effort to change your diet or use hydrotherapy such as an enema. Toxins that build up in the colon can lead to other diseases such as digestive tract disorders, constipation, a weakened immune system, diarrhea and even problems with your skin.

LASIK surgery corrects many vision problems and eliminates the need for glasses.

Until recently, the idea of using lasers in surgery would have seemed like something out of Star Trek rather than a real possibility. However, today there are many surgical procedures that use lasers to treat a variety of illnesses. The most common laser surgery is LASIK, which stands for Laser-assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. LASIK is a procedure that uses lasers to correct impaired vision. It is an elective procedure which means that it is voluntary and deemed unnecessary for good health. It also means that many health insurance policies won’t cover the procedure. However, millions of people elect to undergo the procedure every year.
Before a person considers undergoing LASIK surgery there are some basic benefits and risks that should be understood. The most basic benefit to LASIK surgery is vision correction without the use of glasses or contact lenses. For people bothered by wearing glasses or contact lenses, LASIK is a wonderful alternative. The procedure takes just a few hours and is most often free of any discomfort. Ninety-five percent of all LASIK patients report little to no complications after recovering from the procedure.
However, LASIK is not without its share of risks. For five percent of patients who undergo the procedure there are some complications that arise. Complications include under-correction, over-correction, blurred vision, light sensitivity, dryness of the eyes and in very rare instances infection. The most common complication is under-correction which just means that the surgery didn’t correct the vision problem fully. Under-correction can be fixed by a follow-up surgery after 90 days of the initial surgery. For people who are left with over-correction, however, there is no solution other than to be prescribed with new corrective lenses or contacts. Most symptoms of blurred vision, light sensitivity and dry eyes go away on their own after a few weeks although there are some cases where eye drops are necessary for life after LASIK surgery because some damage to the tear duct occurred during the procedure. Infections are rare but are very serious, usually requiring special treatment.
Another risk to be considered by anyone thinking about LASIK surgery is that because it is a relatively new procedure, there is nothing known about possible long-term effects. Also, a large number of people who undergo the surgery will find that they will still need to use glasses later in life as the eyes age, making LASIK only a temporary fix to vision problems.
Whether or not you choose to undergo LASIK, you should always consult an optometrist and not just a LASIK specialist. Getting advice from a doctor who isn’t making money from your procedure is the only way to get an impartial opinion about whether LASIK is a good option for correcting your vision.

In this age of plastic surgery and Botox injections, looking younger has never been easier - or costlier. Fortunately, there are some basic changes you can make in your life to prevent wrinkles and keep you looking younger...

Besides surgery, there are many ways to prevent wrinkles.

In this age of plastic surgery and Botox injections, looking younger has never been easier – or costlier. Scalpels and syringes may be effective in keeping you younger looking, but they’ll make your pocketbook penniless in the process. Fortunately, there are some basic changes you can make in your life to prevent wrinkles and keep you looking younger.

1. Drink water. Your skin is in constant need of water and when you are dehydrated, the body places other organs in the high priority bracket while leaving your skin to fend for itself. Persistent dry skin can lead to that leathery look that eventually leads to deep wrinkles. Hydrated skin stays softer and more pliable, which allows the skin to move around the muscles and fall back in place without causing the creases that lead to wrinkle lines.

2. Eat a healthy diet. Vitamins are very important to the skin, especially Vitamin E. Other important vitamins include Vitamins A, B and C. The oils and minerals from seeds and vegetables are also good for the skin. Also, research into foods rich with antioxidants are being discovered to have great potential with their anti-aging capabilities.

3. Avoid habits that damage the skin. Most people are aware of the effect of smoking on the skin. Smokers are almost always perceived as older than they really are. But what about coffee? Coffee has a very negative effect on the skin because it dehydrates the body and because it tenses the muscles, which can lead to wrinkles. Alcohol will also dehydrate the body and will also cause blemishes, often referred to as “red face.” Also, if stress is a habit in you life, taking up meditation, yoga or just making time to relax will help stave off those unwanted frown lines.

4. Protect your skin from the sun. A bronze tan is very attractive on a young person with healthy skin, but constant exposure to the sun will surely make that person’s skin more wrinkled and leathery as he/she ages. If you absolutely must have a summer tan, be sure to lay out in short intervals to let the sun into your skin gradually. Excessive exposure to the sun in a short amount of time will not let the skin heal properly; causing the body to make the skin tougher to protect itself, which in turn causes the leathery look of the sun worshipper. Also, be sure to use a sun screen that nourishes the skin as well as protects. There are a variety of products available that are recommended by dermatologists that protect the skin better than those available at the local drug store. Sunglasses are another anti-wrinkle device. Wearing sunglasses will keep you from squinting, which is the major cause of the “crow’s feet” that develop around the eyes as you grow older.

5. Use a topical cream that prevents wrinkles. The science of dermatology has vastly improved over the years and new and improved products that nourish the skin and keep it from wrinkling are being created all the time. Consult a doctor or a dermatologist to stay updated with the best that is available. If you are unable to visit a doctor, then go to any high-end department store that sells skin creams to learn of the best products available without a prescription.

Hair loss is one of the most perturbing facets of growing old. But is all hair loss inevitable, caused by bad genetics? The answer is no. Hair loss can be caused by a wide variety of factors other than a genetic predisposition to it.
A normal scalp will grow hair from roughly 90 percent of its follicles and each follicle will grow hair for two to six years. After the hair’s growth period, the follicle will go dormant for a period of time only to be pushed out by a new follicle and the process to be repeated again.
Visible hair loss occurs when either the 90 percent of follicles that are in the growth phase shrinks and more follicles go dormant or when follicles die and are not replaced by new ones. Unfortunately, if your follicles are dying and not being replaced, there are few options other than expensive hair replacement surgery. However, if your scalp is just reducing the number of follicles that are in a growth cycle and increasing the number of dormant follicles, there are a variety of simple causes and solutions to your hair loss.

1. Stress. Our bodies react to stress in different ways. Some people will eat more and put on pounds when they are stressed. Others will loose sleep and become irritable. And some will loose hair from it. The scalp looses about 125 strands of hair per day. If you notice that you are loosing more during times of stress, then you may be suffering from stress-related hair loss. Relaxing more, taking up meditation or yoga, taking more vacation time or any other activity that relieves stress should help you keep more hair on your head.

2. Chemical reaction. Not all shampoos are good for your hair, and people react differently to different kinds of shampoos. The chemicals used to cause shampoo to lather are sometimes irritable to the scalp and may cause more damage to your hair than just simply make it clean. Try using all natural shampoos or shampoos that use less than 5 percent chemicals.

3. Fungi. Just like toes can grow fungus that cases athlete’s foot, the scalp is also susceptible to certain fungi that lead to hair loss. If you discover fungus on your scalp, treat it right away with proper medication.

4. Diet. A bad diet can also cause hair loss. Certain food contains essential minerals, vitamins and oils that are important for healthy hair. Foods rich in B vitamins, amino acids, biotin, beta-carotenes and folic acid promote healthy hair. Minerals such as magnesium, sulfur, silica and zinc also keep hair healthy.

5. Health issues. Hair loss is sometimes a symptom of a more serious health problem. Diseases such as Diabetes and Lupus can cause hair loss, as well as certain issues with the thyroid glands. If you suspect that you are loosing hair abnormally, consult a physician to make sure you are not suffering from a more serious condition.

Sweating is a natural function of the body. It occurs when the body gets hot, either from exercise of just being in a hot climate, to help cool it down. Sometimes the body sweats as a reaction to stress or nervousness. But for two to three percent of the population, excessive sweating can happen at for unforeseen reasons and at the most embarrassing times.

There are two types of excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis – focal and generalized. When someone sweats excessively from a certain area of the body more than other parts of the body, it is called focal. A person who sweats from the armpits has a different type of focal hyperhidrosis than someone who excessively sweats from the feet.

The cause of focal hyperhidrosis is unknown; however, all but a few extreme cases are treatable through a variety of products. Most cases can be controlled by over-the-counter antiperspirants. If the drug store variety doesn’t work, prescription antiperspirants are available. Iontophoresis, a process that uses electrical currents is another treatment for excessive sweating. There are also oral medications called anticholinergics that are used to treat hyperhidrosis. Recently, doctors have also prescribed the use of Botox injections to treat excessive sweating of the armpits.

Generalized hyperhidrosis is when the body sweats all over for no apparent reason. The causes of generalized hyperhidrosis vary and are usually associated with another issue in the body. Spinal chord injuries, heart problems, anxiety disorders, infections, cancer or a reaction to a certain medication or even a certain type of food or spice can be the cause of generalized hyperhidrosis. Seek treatment for these diseases or avoid the foods that cause the sweating and you should see relief from the sweating. Extremely rare cases of generalized hyperhidrosis are not associated with any other condition and must be treated with oral medications or in rare cases even surgery.
