Getting on a bicycle and riding off into the sun can do wonders for your cardio and overall health.  This great workout is fun and you can actually never feel like your pushing yourself if you dont want to as you have gears that can make things easier for you and is a great form of low impact aerobics which in any form can provide a steady increase of oxygen into your veins and brain.  Bike riding has also been proven to reduce stress, depression and anxiety as it has been shown in various stydies that exercise increases the endorphins in the brain and primarily stimulates the production of norepunephrine which has also been proven to improve mood and greatly decrease the natural buildup of cortisol and adrenaline and this strickly reduces and basically wipes out anxiety and stress.
As far as what type of bike to use there are basically three types; hybrid, mountain and road bikes.
Road bikes have curved handle bars this tires and basically have 10 to 12 gears and the frames are usually light.  These are best for medium to long rides and best on dry pavement.
Mountain bikes have a lower straight handle bar with knobby tires specifically designed for off road dirt riding and ussually has around 21 gears and depending on price the frame can be light to medium heavy.
The lasted generation of bikes includes the hybrid type which is a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike and has straight handle bars and is for short to medium riding.  Its tires are thin with small nubs for trail riding and over up to 24 gears.  These bikes are my favorite as they are designed for medium to long rides and light trail rides.
Bike riding can increase:
increased calories burned
increased endurance and stamina
balance and flexibility

Bike riding can be done by people of all ages, from childhood up even through the adult years when achy joints will not allow for more stressful exercise like jogging.
Bike riding can also be good for your state of mind as it has been proven to be a great stress releaser and regardless of if you are riding purely for pleasure or for a specific purpose, you will certainly arrive at your destination feeling relaxed, energized.
Being out on your bike is good for the people around you as well. You are able to go the places you want to go and yet put one less car on the road and you will be giving yourself many more riding days to come.
