Ayurvedic herbs such as holy basil are great for keeping your blood sugar well balanced.  The holy basil plant contains essential oils that produce eugenol, methyl eugenol and caryophyllene which all stimulate the pancreas and cause it to naturally stimulate insulin production.

This basil can normalize your blood sugar levels, lower your blood pressure and blood fats, can strengthen your immune system and is great in the fight against cholesterol and is considered to be one of the best medicinal herbs ever known to man.  Since stress can give you higher glucose level holy basil lowers your blood sugar levels and can give you a hand in controlling stress.  A few leaves dropped into your drinking water or food alone can aid you in protecting one against various infections since it actually kills the germs in the water. Even the scent of it can shield your entire family from viral infections such as coughs and colds and other infections and is a big reason why many households in Asia have holy basil plants inside their homes. In order for holy basil to be effective for diabetics they must include 6 to 10 leafs in their diet at least once per day or if taken in power for about 2.5 grams every morning.

Some background on diabetes: type I diabetes is when your insulin level is very low and cannot carry glucose to your cells.  In type 2 diabetes, there is way too much sugar or glucose in your blood but plenty of insulin although the cells will not let the glucose in and as a result the glucose builds up in your blood and starves your cells from it fuel which will eventually damage your health.  Being hypoglycemic means that you have a low amount of sugar in your blood, which can be very tough on your heart and forces your pancreas to excrete its emergency reserves of insulin in large doses which can trigger high blood pressure and will eventually cause your pancreas to give out and can lead to blindness, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke.  It has been estimated that by the end of 2011 almost 40% of all Americans over the age of 65 will have type 2 diabetes and keep in mind that being overweight is the number one leading cause of diabetes.

Holy basil is readily available in fresh, powder and pill form and can be consumed in a variety of ways and by using them you can have a healthier life, lower your cost of health care and live longer.
