Knowing basic facts about diet and nutrition will help you loose weight.

There are whole industries devoted to weight loss – diet books, exercise machines, workout programs and cosmetic surgery are all for sale to help you loose weight. But are they effective or even necessary? The answer is no. Weight loss is simple if you know enough about the body’s physiology and you are dedicated to sticking with a diet and exercise plan. In this article we’ll explore some of the common misconceptions about dieting and look at some of the basic solutions to loosing weight.
The first major misconception about dieting is that you have to starve yourself to loose weight. The fact is that starving yourself will only cause you to gain weight because the body will begin to look any food that enters it as important to store rather than burn for energy. Eating regularly throughout the day is an important aspect of a good weight-loss diet. Also, people who skip meals tend to overeat when they finally do sit down for a meal.
There is much debate today about whether a diet should be high in carbohydrates or high in proteins and fats. There are studies on both sides that point to the benefits of one diet or the other. It may come down to how your body reacts to different foods and there may not be one magic bullet diet for everyone. The truth of the matter is that a diet only works to loose weight if it consumes fewer calories than it burns. One pound of body fat is equal to 3500 calories. If you consume, say, only 2000 calories per day and you burn 3000 calories per day, then you will undoubtedly loose weight on that diet. Despite what the proponents of high carb or high fat diets suggest, the only sure way to loose weight is to count your calories and eat foods healthy enough to make you feel good.
There a lot of diet books that make the claim that you will loose weight on their diet, even without regular exercise. This is a very misleading statement. Although some diets will reduce the calories that you consume to the point that regular activity will cause the body to burn enough calories to loose weight, these are almost always impossible diets to maintain. Eventually you will not get the adequate nutrition your body needs and this will cause cravings and eventually you will get off the diet to satiate the body. Eating enough calories per meal to feel full and then burning off those calories is the only sure way to loose weight and be healthy. Exercise will help quicken the body’s metabolism and also build muscle to aid in burning off fat. It is also easier to burn off more calories than you take in if you exercise.
Sticking to these basic guidelines is all you need to start loosing weight and developing a diet plan that works for you. Rather than joining expensive gyms, weight loss clubs or other gimmicks, you should instead find cookbooks that show how many calories per serving are in every meal and use readily available charts that show how many calories the body burns for various activities. This is the only sure way to achieve weight loss.
